Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder-Six Helpful Steps

The following are six steps to discourage those furry little squirrels and turn your "squirrel" feeder into a squirrel proof bird feeder.

The first step, for a squirrel proof bird feeder, is to understand that the placement of your bird feeder is very important. It seems that those cute little busy bodies can reach your bird feeder from almost anywhere. Keep the feeder far enough away from trees, fences, buildings or anything they can climb on to reach your bird feeder.

Second, a squirrel proof bird feeder baffle is installed on the bottom of the pole to stop squirrels from climbing up the pole to your now squirrel proof bird feeder. On the top of the feeder a squirrel proof bird feeder baffle is placed there just in case they find a structure to drop in from.

The next step, to eliminate squirrels from leaping and climbing to your bird feeder, is to attach your squirrel proof bird feeder to a wire that is far away from structures. Many times that may eliminate the leaping and climbing but you may look up at some point to see them walking the wire to the feeder. Remember, those little characters can be very resourceful. If they could only clean the gutters out while they're running across the roof to jump on your squirrel proof bird feeder!

Fourth, is to buy a squirrel proof bird feeder. Stores carry many different types of squirrel proof bird feeders. One type is a squirrel proof bird feeder that has a baffle installed on the top of the feeder. This causes the squirrel to slide off to the ground. Another type of squirrel proof bird feeder is a tube style. The feeder tube is long enough so when the squirrel reaches down he can't reach the perch or the food. Hence, a squirrel proof bird feeder! There is also a squirrel proof bird feeder that has a weight activated perch that flips the squirrel off unharmed.

Another idea, for a squirrel proof bird feeder, is to only fill the feeder with the seeds that are not the squirrel's favorite foods. These seeds include thistle seed, safflower seed or suet. They would have to find other places to invade.

And finally, a simple way to a squirrel proof bird feeder is to set-up a separate feeding area for the squirrels with their favorite treats. Treats like unsalted peanuts, other nuts and sunflower seeds are among their favorites. As always, if you can't beat them, feed them!
